Six Eyes (2023) holds significant weight in my portfolio because it is the first painting I completed after graduating college. It is an augmented portrait of my mannequin named Ivanka. The work, therefore, signifies a new direction from the previous ten months: a smaller scale ranging from 16x20 to 24x24 inches. This portrait also begins to dismantle a structure I had set for myself as I collage: two eyes, a nose, a mouth, etc.… Returning to a smaller scale in the summer of 2023 allowed me to rethink my figurations and explore creative possibilities that are more asynchronous to reality. In addition, the colors used in the painting nod to previous works I have done in Ivanka’s likeness. The green background harkens back to my first portrait of the mannequin, titled Ivanka (2022), and the purple in the shirt resembles the same color used in my 8-foot painting, Stealing Angels (2023). Since I found Ivanka, she has been the starting point for any creative project I take on, and so my portrayal of her tends to showcase directly the ideas I play with in the studio and how they shift over time.
